How to handle business infighting
Business disputes can be a real headache. Whether it’s a dispute with a customer, supplier, or another business, it’s important to deal with the situation in a professional and efficient manner.
Disputes can happen at all levels of a business. According to Irish commercial law firm Adams Law, disputes fall into the following categories:
- disputes with investors
- disagreements between shareholders or partners
- disputes with employees and directors
- disagreements with customers or suppliers
Here are 5 steps you can take to deal with business disputes.
Step 1: Understand the dispute
The first step in dealing with any business dispute is to understand the nature of the dispute. What is the other party claiming? What do they want? What is your side of the story? Once you have a clear understanding of the situation, you can begin to look at ways to resolve the dispute.
Step 2: Talk to the other party
Once you have a good understanding of the dispute, the next step is to reach out to the other party and try to talk through the issue. It’s important to remember that there are two sides to every story, so try to be open-minded and see things from their perspective. If you can come to an agreement between yourselves, that’s great! If not, don’t worry, there are other options available.
Step 3: Write to the other party
If you’re unable to reach an agreement by talking things through, the next step is to put your side of the story in writing. This doesn’t have to be anything formal, but it should outline your version of events and what you think would be a fair resolution. Again, try to be reasonable and avoid making demands that are unrealistic or unreasonable.
Step 4: Seek help from a third party
If you’ve tried talking things through and writing down your side of the story but you’re still unable to come to an agreement, it might be time to seek help from a neutral third party. This could be somebody like a mediator or arbitrator. Their job is to help both parties come to an agreement that is fair and reasonable.
Step 5: Go to court or tribunal
If all else fails and you’re unable to come to an agreement, your last resort is going through the court or tribunal system. This should only be considered as a last resort as it can be costly and time-consuming. However, if you feel like you have no other option, this could be the way forward for you.
Dealing with business disputes can be tricky but hopefully, these five steps will give you some guidance on how best to proceed. Remember that communication is key and try to stay calm throughout the process. And if all else fails, seek help from a third party who can offer impartial advice.
