Yes. Your commenting on my blog is a great example that illustrates good use of social media. You read a thought of mine. You agreed. You built on it and shared your thoughts. Now others get to read what we both combined into a more refined thought. In the process, we have found common ground and been compelled to find out more about eachother. In my opinion, that's an ideal use of social media.

If somebody follows me and I follow back only to get an auto reply to get to know them on FB- that is an auto unfollow. The lack of sincerity and connection is a big zero. Why follow me if you don't even find out about me. And you, the person, hasn't made the decision, wouldn't read my tweets anyway and you don't care.

i still believe that it isn't numbers but quality. Why would I spend all the time and effort to gets thousands of followers if none of them have any interest in what I do, never interact with me, never RT anything I sau or correspond with me. What's the point of the follow.

Anyway, how do you keep track of what thousands of your followers are saying? You don't. It's impossible So why do it?

There's a balance to be reached. Here's where our goals come into play. What I like about social media is that it is so measurable. Once you decide why your their, the rest is fairly easy.

And not just because you say nice things. :-D
I know that if you agree with me, I must be onto something. Thanks for being a gauge.

Cheers,

Don, I don't like those robotic replies either. I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with social media in general. On one hand, I don't have time to be on it all day so I automate some things; on the other hand, I want to relate to people as much as possible. It's a conundrum I haven't resolved yet, but I'm working on it.

Don, we think alike. On June 6th I wrote a blog entitled "How are You Using Social Media?" where I make the same point re automatic tweets that you've made in this excellent post. Great piece of writing, my friend!
